Letting go/putting burdens down

Instead of making New Year’s resolutions, Maggie Smith, in one of her recent “For Dear Life” posts suggests we let go or release ourselves from things that have held us back or burdened us in this past year. We don’t need to ”resolve” to be better. Forget that unfulfillable promise to diet, exercise more, be a better housekeeper, do tai chi every day, balance your checkbook exactly. Mostly those aspirations just make us feel guilty.

Instead, Smith suggests, let go of the things that have held you back. What a great approach to the New Year! I’m going to stop worrying about my tai chi teaching schedule each time I need to make changes; work on my novel when it pleases me to do so and not guilt myself if I don’t write every day; ease up on cooking–we can have the same thing two nights in a row. My yard will never be a landscaper’s dream, so if it’s weedy and overgrown here and there, okay, I’ll just go with nature’s flow.
