Another way that tai chi can be helpful is if you have any kind of breathing/lung issues. When we move through our fundamental exercises, do tai chi walking, or play with one of the tai chi styles, we can slow and deepen our breathing.
So what is COPD? Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease refers to a family of problems: asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and the like. This group of conditions effects bout 6% of us. It comes from all kinds of things–smoking, industrial dust and fumes, chemical exposure (vapors).
As someone who experiences COPD, I find tai chi immensely helpful. It calms me down, encourages me to time my breath with my movements, start an inhale from the belly, and truly empty my lungs on the exhale.
If you or someone you know has lung or breathing issues, tai chi might prove helpful. And at the same time it that it helps that annoying COPD, it offers the wonderful strengthening, flexibility, coordination, memory improvement, focus, postural awareness that you probably already know about.
