Technology has its way with us…

When our technologies work well we don’t really think about them. The way these systems help us becomes matter-of-fact, whether it’s the cellphone, laptop, dishwasher, exercise bike, furnace, or something as simple as a pencil (yes, a pencil is a technology too, just an old one). Then the pencil breaks, the dishwasher ceases to clean plates and glasses, or a Zoom link you’ve set up goes whacko and doesn’t let people join your event. SOOOOOO frustrating. I’ve experienced many of such things, as I’m sure has happened to you too.

Our bodies are not technological although technologies can assist them. Oh how I look forward to good hearing aids (I pick them up on March 3) and I’m happy with my lightweight eyeglasses. So far I’ve not needed a joint replacement, but am so glad they’re available for folks and enhance their lives.

But here’s the thing: This marvelous non-technology called a body requires more care than the technological items we use. I’m not telling you anything new when I say that means exercise of appropriate kinds, good nutrition, adequate rest, mental and social activities to keep you alert, art or religion or nature’s beauty to keep you inspired. And more. So, please keep on taking care and here’s hoping the body you have cooperates even if the technologies like Zoom and phones and household items fail or need repairs or even replacements.

  1. Technology certainly has its way with me, dear Anne, and I’m grateful for its many interventions in my life, but even more, I’m grateful for how I’ve learned and continue to learn how to care for my body. When I was young, I distrusted and had contempt for it since it kept getting sick. In my old age, I’ve learned to appreciate and love it for all it’s done and continues to do.

My thoughts and love reach out to you and Jim as he goes through cancer treatment. Please tell him for me that I care a lot about him. And of course I love you dearly.

    Love, Sue
