Apple a Day and then some

Our abundant crop of apples is sullied by a condition called sooty blotch–dark spots on the surface that can be scrubbed and washed off, but the storage time is shortened. So I’ve been making applesauce, jelly, apple-raspberry “jutter” (a cross between an apple butter and a raspberry jam), and also peeling and coring and slicing some to store in the freezer. Not to mention the low-sugar/low carb apple crumbles we’ve been enjoying. Today’s apple chore will be chutney. We grow things organically and sometimes suffer some unforeseen problems. Next year we’ll use some organically acceptable sprays and hope that deters the blotch (too many apples on trees plus damp warm weather sets up conditions that give the fungus a chance). I’m still grateful for this massive crop and happy there are so many things to do with them.
